What Does Van Insurance Include?

A strong commercial van policy goes well beyond just covering the vehicle. Here's what to look for.

🛡️

Vehicle Cover

Covers your van for accidental damage, fire and theft at the cover level you choose. Comprehensive is usually recommended for business use.

🔧

Tools in Transit

Protects tools and equipment stored in your van against theft. Essential for tradespeople — tool theft from vans is extremely common. Check the limit carefully.

📦

Goods in Transit

For couriers and delivery drivers — covers the goods you're carrying against loss, theft or damage. Usually a separate add-on with its own sum insured.

🚐

Courtesy Van

A replacement van while yours is off the road being repaired. Vital for sole traders — without it, you could lose days of income from a single incident.

🔩

Breakdown Cover

UK and European roadside assistance. Can often be added to a van policy or purchased separately. Critical cover for sole traders relying on one vehicle.

🌍

European Cover

Most UK van policies include minimum EU cover as standard. Extended European cover is available if you regularly travel to the continent for work.

🪟

Windscreen Repair

Windscreen replacement or repair without affecting your no-claims bonus. Particularly valuable for high-mileage tradespeople on motorways and A-roads.

⚖️

Legal Expenses

Covers legal costs if you're involved in an incident that wasn't your fault — recovering uninsured losses, personal injury claims and motoring prosecutions.

Which Use Class Do You Need?

Getting your use class wrong can invalidate your policy. Here's a simple guide to the four main types.

Class 1

Own Goods / Tools

Driving to job sites, carrying your own tools, materials and equipment. Suitable for most sole traders — plumbers, electricians, builders, cleaners and similar trades.

Class 2

Multiple Business Users

Extends Class 1 to named additional drivers using the van for business. Useful if an employee or partner also drives the van for work purposes.

Class 3

Commercial Travelling

High-mileage roles where the van is used primarily for travelling between many customer locations — such as mobile sales, field engineers or territory managers.

Hire & Reward

Courier / Delivery

Carrying other people's goods or passengers for payment. Required for couriers, delivery drivers, Amazon Flex and similar. Standard business use does not cover this.

⚠️ Important: Using a private motor policy for any business purpose is likely to invalidate your cover. Always declare the correct use class — underinsurance penalties can leave you liable for the full cost of an accident.

Choosing Your Cover Level

Three levels of van cover are available. Comprehensive is usually the best value for business use.

💡 Tip: Comprehensive van insurance is often cheaper than TPFT — insurers associate lower cover levels with higher-risk drivers. Always get quotes at all three levels before assuming third party is cheapest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Your car insurance policy does not extend to a van, and a standard private car insurance policy will not cover a van used for business purposes. You need a dedicated commercial van insurance policy that correctly describes your vehicle type and business use.
Not automatically. Standard van policies cover the vehicle itself, not its contents. Tools in transit cover must be added as an optional extra. Limits typically range from £1,000 to £10,000+ depending on the insurer and your premium. Check the limit carefully — underestimating the value of your tools is a common and costly mistake.
Hire & reward cover is required whenever you carry goods or passengers belonging to someone else in exchange for payment. This includes couriers, delivery drivers, Amazon Flex drivers and food delivery. Standard business use (Class 1–3) does not cover this — using your van for paid deliveries without hire & reward cover will invalidate your policy.
Yes — most major van insurers offer same-day cover online. Once you've purchased a policy, you'll typically receive a certificate of insurance by email within minutes. Cover starts from the date and time you select.
Not automatically, but some insurers will consider your car no-claims history when calculating your van premium. Others keep them entirely separate. It's worth declaring any existing no-claims history when getting quotes, as it may reduce your premium even if it can't be formally transferred.
Only drivers named on your policy are covered. If a colleague or employee drives your van without being named, any incident will not be covered. You can usually add named drivers mid-term for a small additional premium. Some insurers offer any-driver van policies, though these tend to be more expensive.
