Single Van Insurance

The most common form of commercial motor cover in the UK. Essential for sole traders, tradespeople, couriers and small businesses operating one van for work purposes.

A standard private car policy does not cover a vehicle used for business — you must declare business use and hold a commercial motor policy.

  • Comprehensive, TPFT or third-party only cover levels
  • Business use classes 1, 2 and 3 available
  • Tools in transit add-on widely available
  • Goods in transit cover for couriers and delivery
  • Breakdown cover and windscreen repair options
  • Courtesy van during repairs

Fleet Insurance

A single policy covering multiple business vehicles — typically from 2 vehicles upwards. Far simpler to manage than individual policies, with one renewal date and a single point of contact.

Fleet policies can cover mixed vehicle types (vans, cars, HGVs) under the same policy, and usually offer any-driver cover for greater operational flexibility.

  • 2 to 500+ vehicles on a single policy
  • Any-driver or named-driver options
  • Mixed vehicle types on one policy
  • Fleet management and telematics available
  • Breakdown cover across all vehicles
  • Dedicated fleet account manager with most insurers

Company Car Insurance

Cover for cars owned by a business and used by employees — whether for sales, site visits, commuting or personal use. Can be arranged per vehicle or as part of a fleet policy.

If employees also use the car privately, the policy must include social, domestic and pleasure (SDP) use in addition to business use.

  • Business use classes 1, 2 and 3
  • SDP + business combined policies available
  • Multiple drivers per vehicle
  • GAP insurance available for financed vehicles
  • Includes European driving cover in most policies
  • Can be added to existing fleet policy

HGV & Lorry Insurance

Specialist cover for heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. HGV insurance is more complex than van insurance and must reflect the type of goods carried, operating radius and driver licence classes held.

Most HGV policies are arranged through specialist brokers due to the high value of vehicles and loads involved.

  • Vehicles from 3.5t to 44t GVW covered
  • Haulage, tanker, tipper and specialist bodies
  • Goods in transit cover included or as add-on
  • Operators' licence compliance checks available
  • European haulage cover available
  • Breakdown and recovery across UK and EU

Specialist & Plant Vehicle Insurance

Cover for non-standard commercial vehicles including agricultural machinery, plant equipment, mobile cranes, recovery vehicles, ice cream vans and modified vehicles.

Specialist vehicles often need bespoke policies as standard commercial motor products don't cover unusual body types, specialist equipment or off-road use.

  • Agricultural, plant and construction equipment
  • Recovery and breakdown vehicles
  • Ice cream vans and mobile catering units
  • Modified or customised commercial vehicles
  • Mobile cranes and access platforms
  • Road and off-road combined cover available

Key Cover Types Explained

Commercial motor policies can include a range of extensions beyond basic vehicle cover. Here's what to look for.

🛡️

Comprehensive Cover

The highest level of protection — covers your vehicle for accident damage (your fault or not), fire, theft, vandalism and third-party claims. Recommended for most business vehicles.

📦

Goods in Transit

Covers goods, materials or stock you're carrying in your vehicle against loss, theft or damage. Essential for couriers, delivery drivers and hauliers. Usually a separate add-on.

🔧

Tools in Transit

Covers tools and equipment stored in your van against theft. Standard vehicle policies often exclude tools — this is one of the most important add-ons for tradespeople.

🚖

Hire & Reward

Required if you carry passengers or goods for payment — including taxis, private hire, couriers and food delivery. Standard business use does not cover hire & reward.

🌍

European Cover

Most UK commercial policies include minimum EU cover as standard. For regular European haulage or international deliveries, an extended continental policy is recommended.

📡

Telematics & Black Box

Telematics policies track driving behaviour and can significantly reduce premiums for fleets with good driver records. Increasingly standard in fleet management.

⚠️ Important: Using a vehicle for business purposes on a standard private motor policy is likely to invalidate your cover. Always declare the correct use class and ensure your policy covers the actual activities your drivers undertake.

Comparing Cover Levels

All commercial motor policies must offer at least third-party cover by law. Here's how the three main levels compare.

Cover Element Third Party Only Third Party, Fire & Theft Comprehensive
Damage to other vehicles / property
Injury to third parties
Fire damage to your vehicle
Theft of your vehicle
Accidental damage to your vehicle
Vandalism / malicious damage
Windscreen repairOptional
Courtesy vehicleOptional
Tools / goods in transitAdd-on
💡 Tip: Comprehensive cover is often cheaper than TPFT for commercial vehicles, as insurers associate TPFT buyers with higher risk. Always get quotes for all three levels before assuming third party is the budget option.

Everything a Van Driver Needs

Single van insurance is our most requested commercial motor product. Here's what makes a strong van policy.

🔧

Tools in Transit

Don't leave your tools at risk. Add tools in transit cover to protect your equipment against theft from an unattended vehicle.

📦

Goods in Transit

Carrying customer goods or deliveries? Goods in transit cover protects what's in the back — up to £10,000 or more depending on your load.

🚐

Courtesy Van

Keep working while yours is off the road. A courtesy van ensures your business doesn't stop when your vehicle goes in for repairs.

🛡️

Public Liability

Some van policies include or offer public liability as an add-on — important if you're working at client premises or in public spaces.

🔩

Breakdown Cover

UK and European breakdown cover available. For sole traders, a van breakdown without cover can mean a full day's lost income.

📍

Black Box / Telematics

Telematics can reduce premiums by 10–30% for safe drivers. Worth considering if you have a clean record or want to control costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — if you use your van for any business purpose, including travelling between job sites or carrying tools, you need a commercial motor policy. Using a standard private vehicle policy for business use is likely to invalidate your cover and could result in an uninsured driving offence.
Class 1 covers the policyholder for business travel and visiting clients. Class 2 extends this to named additional drivers. Class 3 (sometimes called commercial travelling) covers high-mileage roles such as sales reps covering a large area. Hire & reward is a separate category required for carrying passengers or goods for payment.
Not automatically. Standard commercial motor policies cover the vehicle itself, not the contents. Tools in transit cover is a separate add-on and is strongly recommended for tradespeople — tool theft from vans costs UK businesses millions of pounds each year. Check the policy limit carefully, as some cap cover at £1,000–£2,000.
Most fleet policies start from 2 vehicles, but the cost savings tend to become significant from 3–5 vehicles. A fleet policy also simplifies administration considerably — one renewal date, one insurer, one point of contact. Any-driver cover (standard on most fleet policies) also removes the need to name every driver individually.
Yes, most insurers allow mid-term amendments. For named-driver policies, you'll need to notify the insurer and may pay a small admin fee. For any-driver fleet policies, new employees are typically covered automatically as long as they meet the policy's minimum licence and age requirements.
Hire & reward is the general category — it covers carrying goods or passengers for payment. Courier insurance is a specific type of hire & reward policy designed for parcel and delivery drivers. If you deliver for platforms such as Amazon Flex, Uber Eats or similar, you need a hire & reward policy — standard business use does not cover this.
